10 Tips to Improve Your English Speaking
Practical, proven strategies to speak English more fluently and confidently — from shadowing and thinking in English to making the most of 1-on-1 lessons.
You can know thousands of words and every grammar rule in the book — and still freeze when it's time to speak. Speaking is a skill of its own, and like any skill, it improves with the right kind of practice. Here are ten strategies our tutors recommend most often.
1. Speak from day one, not "when you're ready"
The biggest myth in language learning is that speaking comes after studying. In reality, speaking is the studying. You will never feel 100% ready — start talking now, mistakes included. Every awkward sentence you produce today is one you'll say smoothly next month.
2. Practice shadowing
Shadowing means listening to a short audio clip — a podcast, a scene from a series, a YouTube video — and repeating what you hear as you hear it, imitating the rhythm, stress and intonation. Ten minutes a day trains your mouth and your ear at the same time. Choose speakers whose accent you want to acquire.
3. Think in English
Narrate your day silently: "I'm making coffee. I should answer that email. This bus is late again." It sounds silly, but it removes the translation step that slows most learners down. When you catch yourself translating from your native language, pause and rebuild the thought directly in English.
4. Learn phrases, not just words
Native speakers talk in chunks: "to be honest", "it turns out that", "I was wondering if". Memorising ready-made phrases gives you building blocks you can deploy instantly in conversation, and they make you sound far more natural than perfectly assembled — but robotic — word-by-word sentences.
5. Record yourself
Once a week, record yourself speaking for two minutes on any topic. Listen back and note two things to improve — a sound you mispronounce, a filler word you overuse. Then record the same topic again. The discomfort fades quickly; the progress doesn't.
6. Make mistakes on purpose
Perfectionism is the enemy of fluency. Set yourself a rule: in every conversation, attempt at least one structure you're not sure about. If it's wrong, you'll get a correction and remember it forever. If it's right, you've just expanded your comfort zone.
7. Master the sounds your language doesn't have
Every language background has its classic difficulties in English — the th sounds, the difference between ship and sheep, word stress in long words. Identify your three hardest sounds and drill them deliberately for a few minutes a day. Targeted pronunciation work pays off faster than any other kind.
8. Build a speaking routine, not speaking marathons
Twenty minutes of conversation four times a week beats a three-hour session once a month. Consistency rewires your brain; intensity just tires it. Put speaking practice in your calendar like a gym session — same day, same time.
9. Prepare "islands" for conversations
An island is a topic you can talk about comfortably for a minute or two: your job, your city, a hobby, a film you loved. Prepare and polish five islands. They give you safe ground in any conversation and free your attention for the truly spontaneous parts.
10. Get a tutor who makes you talk
Nothing accelerates speaking like regular 1-on-1 conversation with a professional who corrects you in real time, adapts to your level, and won't let you hide in silence like a group class does. A good tutor turns every one of the tips above into a weekly habit.
